Stress Relief of Spring Materials in Mattresses and Futons

Cooling or heating various metals and/or allow to obtain certain properties of the metal, is known as heat treatment. Heat treatment, however, is not when a metal is heated for hot working.

Annealing is when metals are heated and held at a certain temperature level for a period of time, and then cooled to soften the metals and produce changes in the properties of the metal structure.

This is a generic term that is used within heat treatment.

Stress relieving on the other hand is when the metal is heated to a certain temperature level, and held at the temperature for an extended period of time until it has minimal residual stresses. It is then slowly cooled to reduce any possible development of additional residual stresses.

As a part of heat treatment, aging is used to change properties of certain types of metals

and/or alloys. Aging hardens the metal structure which adds durability to the metallic material.

As it was explained earlier, annealing is a part of heat-treatment and it is used to make a metal softer so that other operations can proceed. In order to produce a quality spring, it is necessary for the metal to undergo annealing.

The durability of mattresses and futons are strongly connected with the quality of the springs, which in turn depends on the stress relieving and heating procedures. It is generally recommended for customers to ask whether the mattresses or the futons they buy had been stress released. It is likely for the price to be higher. However, the quality and durability will make the mattresses last significantly longer.
